How to Reduce Shipping Damage Claims When Selling Cards on eBay
Most card shipping problems are preventable when your packing process is consistent, your supplies match the order, and your records are easy to review.
Damage prevention starts before the label
A safe shipping workflow starts before you buy postage. Confirm the exact card, condition, quantity, buyer address, shipping service, and packaging method before anything goes in the mailer.
Most issues come from rushed pulls, loose packaging, weak protection, or using the same method for every order even when the value and card type are different.
Match protection to the order
A single raw card, a multi-card lot, and a graded slab should not be packed the same way. Raw cards usually need a sleeve, rigid protection, team bag, and a mailer that prevents bending. Slabs need padding and enough room that pressure is not placed on the case.
For higher-value orders, build in extra protection and tracking. The small increase in supply cost can be worth it when the sale price is meaningful.
Use a repeatable packing checklist
Create a simple sequence and follow it every time: verify SKU, inspect condition, sleeve or protect the card, seal the card stack, add rigid support, choose the mailer, apply the label, and record the tracking number.
When the process is consistent, it is easier to train yourself, avoid missed steps, and troubleshoot problems if a buyer reports an issue.
Photograph important orders before shipping
For expensive cards, graded slabs, or orders where condition matters heavily, take quick photos of the card and packed order before shipment. This is not about arguing with buyers. It is about keeping better records for your own process.
If a problem happens, you can review what was shipped, how it was packed, and whether your workflow needs a change.
Track supplies as real costs
Better packaging is not free, so include it in the sale math. Top loaders, card savers, team bags, bubble mailers, labels, and cardboard all affect profit.
The VAULTED profit calculator includes packaging supplies so you can price cards with shipping protection in mind instead of treating supplies like invisible costs.
Respond to problems with records
If a buyer reports damage, stay calm and review the order details. Check the listing photos, SKU, shipping method, tracking, and any packing photos you saved. Good records make the next step clearer.
Over time, shipping records help you spot patterns. If one mailer type, card stack size, or packing shortcut causes problems, fix the process before it costs you more sales.
